Why Is My AC Freezing Up? 6 Common Causes (and Fixes) for Florida Homes

If you have ever walked over to your air conditioner on a hot Florida afternoon and found it coated in ice, you are not alone. An AC freezing up is one of the most common cooling problems we see at Synergy Heating & Cooling here in Deltona — and while it looks alarming, the causes are usually straightforward. Here is what makes an AC freeze up, what you can do about it, and when it is time to call a technician.

First, Turn Your System Off

Before anything else, switch your AC off at the thermostat and set the fan setting to “On.” Running a frozen system can damage the compressor, which is the most expensive part of your air conditioner to replace. Let the unit thaw completely — this can take a few hours — before you start troubleshooting.

1. A Dirty Air Filter

The number one cause of an AC freezing up is a clogged air filter. When the filter is packed with dust, it chokes off the airflow moving across the evaporator coil. Without enough warm air passing over it, the coil gets too cold and the moisture on it freezes. In our humid Central Florida climate, check your filter every month and replace it every 30 to 90 days. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that routine filter and coil maintenance is essential to keeping a system running efficiently.

2. Blocked Vents and Closed Registers

Just like a dirty filter, blocked supply vents restrict airflow. Make sure furniture, rugs, and curtains are not covering your registers, and keep the vents in most rooms open. Closing too many vents to “save energy” can actually starve the system of airflow and lead to a freeze-up.

3. Low Refrigerant

Refrigerant is what absorbs heat from your home’s air. When the charge is low — usually because of a leak — the pressure in the coil drops, the coil temperature falls below freezing, and ice forms. Low refrigerant is not something to top off and forget; a leak needs to be found and repaired by a licensed technician. If your AC freezes repeatedly, refrigerant is a likely culprit.

4. Dirty Evaporator Coils

Over time, the evaporator coil collects a film of dust and grime that acts like a blanket, preventing it from absorbing heat properly. The result is the same as a dirty filter: the coil runs too cold and freezes. A professional cleaning during a routine AC maintenance visit keeps the coil working the way it should.

5. A Failing Blower Motor or Fan

If the blower fan is not spinning at full speed, it cannot push enough air across the coil. Worn motors, bad capacitors, or electrical issues can all slow the fan down and cause freezing. This one almost always needs a technician to diagnose.

6. Running the AC on a Cool Night

Air conditioners are designed to run when it is warm outside. Running your AC when outdoor temperatures dip into the low 60s — which does happen on Central Florida evenings — can drop the coil below freezing. If you want air moving on a cool night, use the fan setting instead of cooling.

When to Call a Pro About an AC Freezing Up

If you have replaced the filter, opened your vents, and let the system fully thaw but the AC keeps freezing up, the problem is usually low refrigerant, a dirty coil, or a failing blower — and those need a trained eye. Ignoring a recurring freeze-up can lead to compressor damage and a much larger repair bill.
